Using The Site

Don't Just Sit There, Click Something...

Finding what you seek

  1. Use the Search box at the top right to find pages containing points of interest. For example, by entering the search term 'Cartago', you will receive a list of pages containing this term.
  2. Use the links from the SideBar (the frame on the left), to jump to the different available GPS Wiki groups (Bus Routes, Points of Interest and Tracks), or to learn more about PmWiki.
  3. In each group's home page is a list of group pages, listing the available routes, points or tracks that are included in the group. The GPS group explains the site and provides general information about the site, Costa Rica, maps and GPS.
  4. Use the Site Map? page to view a comprehensive list of groups and their pages.

Using what you find

The different pages have two types of GPS data - points and tracks. Points may be attached as a link to Google Maps, or as a kml/gpx file. Tracks are usually kml files.

Kml files can be opened in Google Earth, either by right clicking on the file and selecting Open With - Google Earth, or by saving the file and opening from within Google Earth. Needless to say, you should have Google Earth installed on your computer to do that.

You can also open the file in Google Maps by going to the site, clicking on the My Maps tab, clicking the Create New Map button, and clicking the Import link. At this point there are two options - entering the url of the kml file (which you can get by right clicking on the link and selecting 'Copy Link Location'), or uploading the kml file if it was saved on your PC.

Finally, you can convert the kml file to a format your GPS unit uses, with a program such gpsbabel, and load it to the GPS.
